The Infrastructure of US-Canada Trade

Early attempts at free trade between the United States and Canada (then British North America) did not last long. In 1965, lasting trade agreements between the two countries began with the signing of the "Autopact". The time line below offers a brief history of free trade agreements between the US and Canada culminating in the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), is currently in effect, has superceded all the other agreements, and now includes Mexico.

1854 - The Reciprocity Treaty

1966 - Canada-US Automotive Products Agreement
  - The Auto Pact: En Route to Free Trade
